stripped Head Cover hole
« Started on: 28-Dec-18, 11:11 »
Merry Christmas everyone!
I removed the head cover to re-torque the head bolts and when replacing the cover discovered to 6mm hole has stripped and will not take a tension bolt.
Any advice on the best fix?

Get yourself a helicoil kit.

 The one you want is M6 x 1.

 It's about the only possible save .... though I used a cut down tech screw for a while ....

  {I still helicoiled after this}

Thanks CHP for the prompt reply.
Super Cheap Auto have a kit that covers a variety of sizes.
Any concerns or experience about the quality?

I have a comprehensive kit purchased from China on ebay. There are no problems.

 In the new Australia this will be the same stuff on local stores shelves anyway.

I've used the Super Cheap kit. The 'insertion' tools are made of fairly soft metal and the machining of the cutout slot is a bit rough. My M6 coil tab thingy got jammed in the slot and it took a bit of effort to remove the tool. The set is good value for money though and is fit for purpose.

I got one from eBay 131 pc kit M5 to M12 for $44 delivered and works well specially the M6 x1 which I have used on tappet covers and to replacement exhaust rivets (M6 ss hex button bolts).

the only issue is the M10 & M12 are not standard Jis ( Japanese Industry Standard) they both should be 1.25 pitch, anyway for $44 not bad, :good: I will cross that bridge when I get there as had no need for larger sizes yet. Make sure you use some Loctite.
