A A A A Author Topic: Spoke wheel conversion rings for CX500-Safety concerns  (Read 116 times)

CXconversion

I have been told that some people believe the spoke rings for conversion are unsafe. I'm wondering if anyone knows about this and the reasons.

Seagrass

I have not heard of any problems BUT I am only aware of a few members on this forum who have done the conversion and I have never personally seen one of the conversions.

I'm about to go down this path. I don't think there is inherently anything unsafe. Issues may arise if inappropriate or inferior materials are used, or it's not done correctly.
e.g. weak bolts, nuts coming loose, spokes breaking if not laced correctly, wrong grade/length of spokes etc.

Either make sure you do your homework or get them built professionally.

There may be legal implications due to uncertified re-engineering of the hubs and using rims without a DOT stamp if that sort of thing bothers you  rolleye0012

The spoke holes are merely drilled in a plate of steel. There is no in or out offset leading to stress on the spokes.

I wouldn't touch them myself but they would be simple enough to make if you wanted to avoid spending the sheckels.

I beg to differ. I wouldn't use home made or simple drilled rings but it's possible to get well designed and engineered rings from reputable sources.

I'll be ordering mine from https://www.caferacerkits.co.uk/ as soon as I can negotiate reasonable postage.
They have bevelled edges to ensure the outside spokes lie properly without bending and have recessed spoke holes. Once fitted, they appear to have basically the same geometry as an original spoke wheel hub.

Fair enough.

But not all spoke rings I've seen have been made as well.

And there have been collapsed wheels with some of these things.

And while the look of spokes is good comstars are much lower maintenance.

I don't miss tweaking spokes at all....

I'm not a guru.....but some general thoughts

The CX was the first /one of the first Hondas with tubeless tires.
While I agree "caféracerkits"(CRK) wheels parts are great-the thought of returning to road side tube patching makes me shudder....

Those BMW spoke wheels that can take a tubeless tire might be the solution if they could be made to fit :grandpa:
