JBS Rear Shocks - Can They Fit My 1978 CX500
« Started on: 23-Feb-19, 18:29 »
I bought "HONDA CX500 320mm JBS REAR AIR/NITROGEN CELL SHOCK ABSORBERS" from Jap Bike Spares a year ago and stored them whilst doing triple bypass and repaint on my 1978 (Dec) CX500.  When trying to mount them, I found that they foul the grab-rail and helmet lock, and can't be fitted (see photos below).  I've penned a message to JBS, but I'm wondering whether I'm being more dense than customary, am I missing something?

Can they go the other way around?

Can't mount with gas reservoir to the front.

I have always seen them mounted with the gas reservoir on the bottom and facing forward.

Thanks Seagrass.  The shocks are supplied with the smaller (10mm) eye diameter installed in the non-reservoir end of the shock for the LHS.  I suppose I could try to drive it out and install upside-down.

Worth checking with the manufacturer which way up they are meant to be installed - I have seen some which state that a specific orientation is needed for proper functionality.

If its only gas it won't matter which way they are mounted.

I'm not a guru but.....I'm sure i've seen many pics of cafes with the remote on top but early marzocchi have the remote on the bottom
As JC has suggested the manufacturer (NOT distributor) may shed some light for your specific shock.

Many modern bikes have the reservoir located some distance away from the shock body so might not be a issue-but the progressive spring might be "upside down" unless you invert it.

Thanks for all of the input.  In the end the only way that the units would fit was with the reservoirs at the bottom and facing rearward.  My sole misgiving with this arrangement is that each reservoir now provides a "cup" to collect rain and dirt.

looks good.
if you are really worried bout the dirt/water accumulating-just get some rubber/silicone plugs/caps to fit over -either from ebay or a local auto- rubber supplier
